1987 Peter Brock Bathurst 1000 VL Commodore ‘05’
This vehicle is NOT a tribute car – it is the actual 05 Mobil Commodore used by Peter Brock in the world famous 1987 Bathurst 1000 motor race, and as campaigned by Peter Brock throughout the 1987 ‘Group A touring car championship’ motor racing season.
This car is the “LAST OF THE LINE” of Australia’s most famous race cars built by Australia’s most successful motorsport hero, Peter Brock, at the headquarters or the mighty Holden Dealer Team, 35 Bertie Street, Port Melbourne.
Chassis No. 17 was built as Peter Brock’s Bathurst mount for 1987, and of course carries his famous racing number ‘05’.
At the end of the 1987 season this car was sold and went to England where it competed in various forms of motorsport until 1999, when it was “rescued” by Queensland industrialist and Brock enthusiast, Peter Champion.
Upon its return to Australia, the car was sent immediately to Australia’s premier Brock / HDT restoration expert, John (also known “The Doc” or “Guru”) Van Roosmalen, with instructions to restore it precisely, to its 1987 Bathurst condition.
During 2000, and it took just over 12 months full time work, the car was stripped of every nut and bolt, to a bare shell, and painstakingly restored, using original and genuine parts, to eventually become “reborn” as you see it today.
This car is not just a static display. It was rebuilt to full racing condition, and actually returned to the racetrack on the occasion of the 2002 Australian Grand Prix, where Peter Brock returned to the driver’s seat for a series of races against Dick Johnson’s Ford Sierra.
Peter was thrilled with the car, saying it had “plenty” !
What you see here represents the end of an era, and an irreplaceable part of Australia’s motor racing heritage.
“BODY BY HOLDEN. SOUL OF BROCK.”
